The Jamestown Rediscovery Foundation is committed to supporting preservation, education, and the archaeological investigation of Historic Jamestowne, the original site of the first Monument to Pocahontas at Jamestown English settlement in America, where three cultures--Native American, European, and African--came together to lay the foundations of modern American society.

The English who came to Jamestown Island in resisted his wish that they become another subject community. Pocahontas was directly involved in the relationship between the English and the Powhatan Indians that whipsawed between friendly trade of food and open warfare and kidnapping.

The Jamestown settlement in the Colony of Virginia was the first permanent English settlement in the Americas. It was located on the northeast bank of the James (Powhatan) River about mi (4 km) southwest of the center of modern Williamsburg.

It was established by the Virginia Company of London as "James Fort" on May 4, O.S.;(May 14, N.S.), and was considered permanent after a Colony: Colony of Virginia.
